...room by emma donoghue
I did something really fancy Friday night. I read this entire book. Well, most of it. See I was about 30 pages in earlier in the week and life got in the way of reading. So with honest intentions to come home from work and run and clean and cook and be social, I sat down on the couch and started reading. I couldn't stop. I have never read a book in an entire setting, but I literally couldn't put it down.
I don't want to oversell it, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but a review on the book jacket by Audrey Niffenegger – she wrote the Time Traveler's Wife – said it better than I, "Emma Donoghue's writing is superb alchemy, changing innocence into horror and horror into tenderness. Room is a book to read in one sitting. When it's over you look up: the world looks the same but you are somehow different and that feeling lingers for days."
Starting the book I knew nothing about it, so that's how I want you to start it too. It's good to go in just expecting a good read, and figure out the story along the way. So go read it!
Buy the book here (it took me 2 months on the waitlist at the library to get it)

...funny pictures of cats
When my friends and I were in high school and super awesome, we wrote "Honk if you like when cats where little outfits" on the back of my minivan (yes, minivan, I told you we were awesome) for our drive down to beach week. Looking back, I'm wondering how we fit that on there. And yes, we got some honks.

...paleo pumpkin bars
Eating 'paleo' is described as 'eating like cavemen.' No gluten, sugar, dairy or processed foods. My boyfriend is semi-following it and has enjoyed it. (I enjoy cake and cookies) But, these bars are super yummy AND paleo. They're not sweet, have a nutty flavor and a subtle pumpkin taste. Almost similar to gingerbread. The crazy thing about these is there's no flour. None. And it's the same consistency as bread. I swear. It's hard to believe, so you should make them yourself. Only 5 ingredients and super healthy. (No excuses Auntie Anne)
Here's the recipe!

...book club
I'm in a book club with my sorority alum group and we read fun (and serious but sometimes I miss those months) books and eat food and discuss the book (and other serious and fun topics) and this month we did something super cool. We read a book written and published by a member of our group! Joan Bretz told us a little about her life and how her first mystery Murder Most Hollywood came to fruition and they were some fantastic stories. Joan has worked in Hollywood, on Broadway and now lives in McLean, Va where she is finally doing what she loves most, (can you guess what that is?) writing.
I'm not going to give anything away in case you guys want to read it (on your beach vacation this summer, it would be so perfect for that) but its a fun, easy read that keeps you involved with the characters and has some fun twists along the way. Nena (that's the main character) is a private detective and she has to find the muse (also girlfriend) of a huge celebrity when she goes missing. Read it!

...these amazing Japan logos
I've noticed lots of designers using their creativity to draw attention to the terrible situation in Japan. Using skills for good is a great thing in my book. Donate to the Red Cross here.

I've recently become obsessed with eating them for breakfast and want to find a fun cocktail to try. Grapefruit margarita anyone? I think it would also be tasty with gin...

...yummy Mondays
Because what else do you have to look forward to? Let's just look at yummy pictures of food all day. Sound good? This is a quick tour of sweets consumed in NYC...
Cupcake from Buttercup Bakery

Compost cookie from Momofuko Milk Bar. Not pictured are the pretzel cake truffles and chocolate malt cake truffles. All so salty and sweet and amazing I could eat 12. And obviously almost forgot to take a picture of the cookie I was distracted by eating it.
Macaroons from Bouchon Bakery in the Time Warner Building. And a TK Cookie, which is basically the best oreo ever. (Pistachio, vanilla and orange creamsicle-I was thinking of you Auntie Anne)
And finally, my momma's favorite, Magnolia Bakery!

...French Fridays
I might try a little weekly Friday theme of posting French inspired photos. We'll see how it goes and if you guys get tired of striped shirts (because I never will)...
Not sure if this is even taken in France...but let's pretend.

...photos of NYC
So there will be approximately 3 posts about New York, mostly because I ate too many sweet things to put in one post. I need to spread them all out a little or I will be reminded of the almost constant stomach ache I had the 4 days we spent there! This one will be full of fun photos!

It's such a classic combination, something I will never get tired of. Especially if it all comes from crew.

...the Oscars
Sunday night was Oscar night. Which is like Superbowl night if you don't care about football. Which I don't, I only like the snacks that come along with it. So we made classy snacks and dressed up and drank champagne punch and watched the red carpet and the awards until we got bored and started talking.
